My work revolves around conservation of species and their habitats. I grew up as a nature lover, trained as a biologist, and started working on conservation of different species (e.g. hoolock gibbons, elephants, bears, birds). Later due to my personal interest, I focused on our (Bangladesh's) national animal- the Bengal Tigers! I conducted my PhD research at the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE), University of Kent, UK on tiger poaching in the Bangladesh Sundarbans. For this, I have worked with the local people in the villages around the forest, and learned that conservation is all about people, their preferences and activities. This has developed me as a social researcher, and made me realize that conservation is not possible until local people realize the developmental opportunities for conservation. With this view, in 2016 I have started to work on different projects at the Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS). I believe these projects will set good examples of interdisciplinary approaches in biodiversity conservation. |
